THE MALAYSIAN SPORT CLIMBING NATIONAL TEAM SELECTIONS

MALAYSIA BOLEH!

Camp5 is proud to have teamed up with the Malaysian Mountain Federation (Persatuan Mendaki Malaysia, PMM) to host the National Team Selections, for a place on Malaysia’s Sport Climbing team, to represent the country at the IFSC Asia: Continental Championships. The big dangling carrot at the Asian Championships? Two golden tickets to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics where Sport Climbing was to debut. The event was held over 25-27 September under pandemic issue SOPs, and without spectators.

With spots for grab in men and women’s boulder and lead categories, over 90 of Malaysia’s strongest climbers would take part in the socially distanced selections.

Boulder Qualifiers were held at Camp5 Utropolis, while Lead Qualifiers were held at Camp5 Jumpa. Boulder and Lead Qualifiers rounded out a weekend of action at Camp5 Jumpa.

Much props to Head Routesetter, Safwan Zainal and his team who worked tirelessly through the night to get the routes ready for the climbers. The selections were held to international standards and the routes were killer!

The Asian Championships were eventually canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with the IFSC using rankings from the 2019 World Championships to determine who would go to Tokyo 2020. Nevertheless, the hunt brought out the best of Malaysia’s strongest climbers.

The best moments are on show in this sweet video from Creative Match (www.creativematchme.com). Hope it gets you pumped for your next session, and who knows, inspired enough to take part next year?

Many thanks to all the athletes who took part for giving it their all and a big CONGRATULATIONS to those selected for the new Malaysia team!
